Books for Educators

A Blueprint for Preparing Teachers: Providing the Best Educators for Our Children (Rowman & Littlefield, 2016). To produce highly effective teachers, this book details the three critical components that must be in play: a rigorous university teacher education curriculum, a highly involved teacher education consortium to constantly monitor the curriculum, and effective follow-up professional development.

Academic Success:  Applying Learning Theory in the Classroom (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013). Numerous examples of classroom applications show how behavioral, constructivist, and cognitive theories can be implemented within the four main categories with which teachers constantly have to deal: motivation; setting goals, objectives and providing feedback; delivering the original learning; and reinforcement.  A case study is also provided.

Differentiating Instruction: Matching Strategies with Objectives (Rowman & Littlefield, 2011). A collection of teacher-centered and student-centered strategies to expand teachers’ repertoires for student involvement and success.  There is an explanation regarding when it would be most appropriate to use each strategy, the theory behind each strategy and how it can be implemented.  Coaching rubrics help teachers to implement each strategy.

Educator or Bully?  Managing the 21st Century Classroom (Rowman & Littlefield, 2011).  Through numerous examples, this book offers a clear, concise, and refreshing way to manage a classroom by showing teachers how to empower students to take responsibility for themselves and for each other.

Exemplary Classroom Questioning: Practices to Promote Thinking and Learning (Rowman & Littlefield, 2011). This book takes teachers to full mastery of their questioning skills and methods to develop deep and critical thinking in students.  Examples of both effective and ineffective questioning practices are presented.

Research-Based Unit and Lesson Planning: Maximizing Student Achievement (Rowman & Littlefield, 2012). This book provides specific ways to plan and implement effective units and lessons that maximize student success.  Coaching rubrics assist teachers in preparing and delivering the plans.

Mastery Teaching Skills: A Resource for Implementing the Common Core State Standards (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013). MTS assists teachers and principals in delivering the CCSS through a review of the main features of the CC along with examples for implementation.  Internationally recognized teaching skill categories and skill criteria assist teachers in successfully delivering the CC.

Two companion texts designed to cover all the main teaching skills are:

Designing and Implementing the Curriculum: A Compendium of Criteria for Best Teaching Practices (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017)  and Questioning, Instructional Strategies, and Classroom Management: A Compendium of Criteria for Best Teaching Practices (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017). These books contain a brief review of the research for each skill.  To ensure that teachers have a method for acquiring and documenting these skills, both books provide teachers with Best Practices Observation Instruments (BPOIs).
